Animal Cell Function Biography

Source:- Google.com.pk
Endoplasmic Reticulum Network of membranous sacs and tubes; active in membrane synthesis and other synthetic and metabolic processes; has rough (Ribosome-studded) and Smooth regions 
Flagellum Locomotion organelle present in some animal cells; composed of membrane enclosed microtubules. 
Centrosome Region where the cell's microtubules are initiated; in an animal cell, contains a pair of centrioles. The function is unknown. 
Cytoskeleton Reinforces cell's shape, function in cell movement; components are made of protein. Consists of Microfilaments, Intermediate filaments, and Microtubules. 
Microfilaments (Actin) Two intertwined strands of actin, each a polymer of actin subunits.
Maintenance of cell shape (Tension-bearing elements)
Changes in cell shape
Muscle Contraction
Cytoplasmic streaming
Cell Motility (as in pseudopodia)
Cell division (Cleavage furrow formation) 
Intermediate filaments (Keratin) Fibrous proteins suspended into thicker cables
Maintenance of cell shape (Tension- bearing elements)
Anchorage of nucleus and certain other organelles
Formation of nuclear lamina 
Microtubules (Tubulin) Hollow tubes
Maintenance of cell shape ( compression resisting "girders")
Cell motility (as in cilia or flagella)
Chromosomes movements in cell division
Organelle movements 
Microvilli Projections that increase the cell's surface area 
Peroxisome Organelle with various specialized metabolic functions; produces hydrogen peroxide. 
Mitochondrion Organelle where cellular respiration occurs and most ATP is generated. 
Lysosome Digestive organelle where macromolecules are hydrolyzed. 
Golgi Apparatus Organelle active in synthesis, modification, sorting, and secretion of cell products. (Packaging) 
Ribosomes Non membranous organelles (small brown dots) that make protein; free in cytoplasm or bound to rough ER or Nuclear Envelope. (Protein Synthesis). 
Plasma Membrane Membrane enclosing the cell. Made out of phospholipids. 
Nucleus includes Nuclear envelope, Nucleolus, and Chromatin. 
Nuclear Envelope double membrane enclosing the nucleus; perforated by pores; continuous with ER. 
Nucleolus non membranous organelle involved in production of ribosomes; a nucleus has on or more nucleoli. 
Chromatin material consisting of DNA and proteins; visible as individual chromosomes in a dividing cell. 
In Animal cells and not Plant cells: Lysosomes, Centrioles, flagella (in some plant sperm). 
Tight Junction The membranes of neighboring cells are very tightly pressed against each other, bound together by specific proteins. Forming continuous seals around the cells, they prevent leakage of extracellular fluid across a layer of epithelial cells. 
Desmosomes (Anchoring Junctions) function like rivets, fastening cells together into strong sheets. They are made of sturdy keratin proteins anchor desmosomes in the cytoplasm. 

Gap Junction (communicating junctions) Provide cytoplasmic channels from one cell to adjacent cell. They consist of special membrane proteins that surround a pore through which ions, sugars, amino acids, and other small molecules may pass. They are necessary for communication between cells in many types of tissues, including heart muscles, and in animal embryos. 
